Service: Built for Swedish-American Line. Service from Göteborg to New York. Major refit in 1953 increased passenger capacity to 548. Initially a bad 'roller' at sea, she was given stabilisers in 1956. On 25 July 1956, shortly after departing from New York, she collided with the Italia Line's Andrea Doria, causing considerable damage to her own bow, and causing the latter ship to sink some 11 hours later. A total of 46 people perished in the collision. Sold to East Germany in 1960 and renamed Völkerfreundschaft. After 25 years service, sold to a Panamanian company and renamed Volker. Then became a barracks ship for refugees in Oslo named Fridtjof Nansen. Sold to Italian company Star Lauro in 1989 and after an extensive refit emerged as the Italia in 1993. Resold again and completely gutted to serve as the hull for the Italia Prima of 15,200 tons. Used for Caribbean cruising. Chartered to Rome-based operator Club Valtur and renamed Valtur Prima in 1999, specialising in trips to Cuba. Now based at Havana and operating for Festival Cruises as the Caribe.
